Rest, Recover and P90X

I apologize if I sound like a broken record player, but like I’ve said before, I find that there’s no reason to schedule rest days into my overall fitness regimen, and I stand by this concept because of weeks like the one I just had.

On Thursday, to my dismay, I had to bail on a morning run I had been looking forward to for days after waking up feeling like crap (sorry @rxbethontherun; already looking forward to this week’s).

There was no doubt about it. I was coming down with the same cold/sore throat one-two-punch that Noah, my mom, my sister-in-law and pretty much anyone else who came within a mile of my adorable nephew last weekend contracted. Typically, I find that a short, easy run is in fact the perfect remedy for an oncoming illness. But Thursday was also one of the hottest days in the history of the world. And at the risk of dehydrating and exacerbating my condition, I made the executive decision to cut back, stay home, sleep more, and recover.

Then on Friday, I woke up feeling achy and tired. Again. And so, again, I bailed on a morning run, this one which was scheduled with my cousin.

Unable to sit still, I attempted to commit to a 45-minute very-light workout to 1) break a sweat and try to fight the germs head on and 2) make myself feel better — a little more like myself at the very least. After all, when you’re so used to breaking a sweat every morning, it can be physically painful to sit yourself out. But as it turned out, even 3 sets of 8-minute abs and a very light and restorative yoga session exhausted me. I tried, and that’s all I can ask for. But when it comes down to it, I’m not sure how much Friday morning’s session actually did. Frustrated, I’m pretty sure I spent more time with my head on my towel and yoga mat than actually moving around.



I’m usually a fever battling all-star and whatnot My go-to routine at the first sign of a sniffle:

  • Multi-vitamin
  • Water
  • Mint iced tea / green tea
  • Water
  • Matzoh ball soup
  • Water
  • Saltines
  • Water
  • Strawberry-banana-spinach smoothie
  • Fruit (I picked up cherries, blueberries and nectarines to snack at my desk all day)
  • Water


But for whatever reason, this one seemed to linger. On Saturday morning, I was still feeling kind of sniffly, and so the only workout I’d get was chasing toddlers around a gymnasium during my nephew and nieces’ joint birthday party. It’s amazing how active these little kids are without having a clue. If adults could find that much joy in tumbling and flipping and jumping for bubbles, the world would be a much fitter, happier place.

While the congestion didn’t let up all weekend, I nevertheless found the energy to go on a date with Noah on Saturday night, silk Theyskin shorts (one of my favorite sample sale finds of this summer) and all…


…and break a real sweat on Sunday. Immediately when we woke up, I convinced him to roll out the yoga mat with me and living room work it out.


Over the course of 45 minutes or so, we finished a line-up of P90X abs, Jillian Michaels Yoga Melt Down, and another of the Biggest Loser trainer’s cardio workouts.

Bam. Did I want to run? Absolutely. But I was also grateful for 50 minutes of something. That’s the great part about these inadvertent periods of rest. There was no guilt to be felt because it had been so long since I’d taken a true, multi-day rest from my habitual mornings in Central Park. Better yet, each day, I’ve grown increasingly excited to get back out there. I just hope that when I do, it’s a natural, fluid and welcomed return.

When I do, I have some cool stuff to look forward to.

If you recall, not long ago, I had the privilege of trying out a pair of ZigCarbon sneakers from Reebok. When I did, I also wrote a review of the sneakers on Reebok’s website, which apparently automatically entered me into a drawing to win one of several giftcards. Somehow, I actually won one of them, earning a $100 “shopping spree” (I’d hardly call $100 a spree, but I’ll go with it) at Reebok.

Obviously, I was stoked, but I had no idea what to buy. If you’ve seen my t-shirt and shorts draw lately, you’d know that I definitely do not need any more running garb. And I’m pretty loyal to my sneakers, so while all of the Reebok styles are pretty to look at, I didn’t feel as though a footwear splurge would be the best way to utilize my Benjamins.

After much deliberation, I settled on a white sports bra (because honestly, you can never had too many of those) and something that might blow your mind. I know it blew mine — almost as much as the total cost, once I factored in shipping and tax.


Yep, that’s right. I bought a watch — you know, a device that has the capability of keeping track of distance, time and pace. Honestly, I have no idea how I feel about this or how I’ll come to like (or not like) wearing a watch. But, that said, there’s only one way to find out. And because it was essentially free, I won’t feel as though I’ve wasted anything in the process either way.

Now it’s Sunday night, and I’m just itching for my package of goodies to come in the mail. For now, I’ll stick to things I know something about: deliciously easy Sunday evening meals. Tonight, it was a salad made with arugula, fresh greens, chickpeas, avocado and cucumbers from my dad’s garden topped with fresh lemon, black pepper, olive oil and parmesan cheese. I paired this with fresh tomato and mozzarella on toast. Noah especially loved the second part, though I think I’d add basil next time.
