This past summer, Noah and I went out to a friend’s farm in rural Pennsylvania for a weekend of debauchery and, what turned out to be, one of the best runs I had that year.
Lush. Quiet. Sound.
The contrast of the rolling hills offered a welcome change from what I had become accustomed to in New York City. And while I only took one run that weekend, my enchantment lingered far longer than summer alone. Yes, I’d have to do that one again — hopefully not too far in the future either.
There might not be much to do in Mann’s Choice, Pennsylvania, but if you happen to ever go out there (or to some other middle-of-nowhere, bucolic locale), I highly suggest you bring your running sneakers along for the ride. Trust me, you’ll be very thankful you did.

It was this very same promise that excited me about the weekend that just came and went. When Noah suggested we take a drive out to the farm a couple of weeks ago, I immediately chimed in, “Absolutely!” Any escape from the noisy city streets, really, is enough to entice me to get up and out, but having been there before, and knowing what was in store, I was even more eager to pack up and go.
Fitness doesn’t always come first when I’m getting away with good friends. I was streaking for a while there, though — not necessarily with my runs but simply with working out in general — and I was hoping to keep it up.

And then on Monday of last week, I was hit with a sore, itchy throat and stuffy nose. A cold? Allergies? Whatever it was (whatever it is), it’s nasty, it’s uncomfortable, and by all means, it’s sticking the hell around.
Tomorrow marks a week of total blah. And while I clearly didn’t get to partake in my much anticipated run (or any other workout, unless you count breathing heavily in my sleep) on Saturday or Sunday, I can at least take solace in the fact that, despite circumstances, I managed to move my body enough last week — a 5 miler, a 4 miler, a day of strength training and a morning of yoga. They weren’t vigorous, but hey — I was vigorously battling a crappy cold.
I’m so, so sick of feeling like this. As the week begins, all I can hope is that I can make a full, speedy recovery — and, if I’m lucky, manage to run as well. Fortunately, this week should be much calmer than last. (To give you a little insight into why I’m probably still under the weather, let’s just say that I spent a lot of time doing this…
To all of you who ran — and rocked — the NYC Half this weekend, you are total badasses in my mind. I may not have been there to cheer anyone on, but you can bet that you were the first people I thought about when I woke up yesterday morning.
To those of you plagued with the NYC cold that’s making its way around town, get rest and get better, so we can all get running again soon.
